Mahindra powers e-plans with 5 new SUVs
LONDON: In one of the biggest scale-up in clean mobility, Mahindra & Mahindra unveiled five new electric SUVs, some through an all-new BE (born electric) brand, as the company hopes to sell over a million greens by 2030 and consolidate its position in the fast-growing bigger off-roader segment.
The company chose the 75th year of the country’s independence to unveil the cars and broader electric strategy at its design centre in the UK, with chairman Anand Mahindra joining the top leadership of Anish Shah (MD & CEO) and Rajesh Jejurikar (director – auto and farm sectors).
The new cars, which will use components from Volkswagen’s MEB platform, will be launched between 2024 and 2026, except for one that comes later. The development underlines the bolder move by the homegrown brand in green mobility where it is estimated to be investing Rs 10,000 crore.
“These vehicles are the cornerstone of our global ambitions,” Anand Mahindra said as he unveiled what he called the “vehicles of tomorrow”.
Mahindra said that it will drive in the electrics under two brands — the popular XUV (with a twin peak copper logo), and an all-new electric-only BE. The vehicles that the company unveiled were XUV. e8 (launch slated for Dec’24), XUV. e9 (Apr’25), BE. 05 (Oct’25), BE. 07 (’26), and BE. 09 (launch date yet to be decided). The vehicles have been developed on an all-new INGLO platform and company officials said that the commonality of parts and designs will help them make substantial savings in product development.
Shah said that he hopes that electrics would comprise a quarter of their sales by 2027, while Jejurikar promised a “robust execution plan” as demand for electrics picks up aggressively.
