Guadana, Bravo help lift Pirates against Bombers

MAC GUADANA and JM Bravo joined forces to lead Lyceum of the Philippines University past Jose Rizal University (JRU), 80-73, for the Pirates’ second straight victory in the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup Sunday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Guadana had 13 points and seven assists, including the last five in a 9-0 blast to start the final quarter that turned a two-point lead into a 70-59 Lyceum advantage with six minutes left.

Bravo was as brilliant throughout and wound up with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

“We just have to remind the players to always stay focused. Mac said ‘Let’s enjoy,’” said head coach Gilbert Malabanan after they gained the lead in Group B. “And the result of this game says it all—we just cheered for each other.”

Emilio Aguinaldo College went scoreless in the last six minutes but still eked out a 68-66 triumph over Arellano University.

Allen Liwag poured in all but two points in an 8-0 surge that broke a 60-all deadlock and gave the Generals a 68-60 edge with less than six minute left in the fourth quarter.

They didn’t score after that but managed to keep their opponents at bay.

College of St. Benilde, meanwhile, snatched its first win, while National University snared back-to-back victories also on Sunday.

Robi Nayve’s midrange jumper with 10.7 seconds left lifted the Blazers over National Collegiate Athletic Association rival Mapua University, 77-76, in a nip-and-tuck affair.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, got the better of the University of the East Red Warriors, 79-64, behind John Lloyd Clemente’s 16 points.
