When Disney+ first launched in the UK back in March 2020, the House of Mouse offered a week-long free trial for anyone who wanted to see what the fuss was about. For seven days, viewers could stream every show, documentary and movie on the streaming platform with no obligation to sign up for Disney+. However, a few months after it launched, Disney+ discontinued its free trial. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been available ever since.
Asked about its decision to end the Disney+ free trial, a spokesperson for the company said: “We continue to test and evaluate different marketing, offers and promotions to grow Disney+. The service was set at an attractive price-to-value proposition that we believe delivers a compelling entertainment offering on its own.”
The end of the free trial isn’t unique to Disney+. Instead, the company simply followed in the footsteps of the most popular streaming platform, Netflix. The US streamer offered a one-month free trial to all new subscribers following its debut in the UK. However, this was soon discontinued. In fact, Prime Video remains the only one of the three main streaming services that still offers a “try before you buy” promotion.
Netflix does make a number of the first episodes of its exclusive boxsets available to watch for free, with users encouraged to subscribe to watch the rest of the season.
