Lawmakers have filed a bill to declare all minimal-tide elevations and superior-tide options, and an space of 3 nautical miles all over the Kalayaan Island Team (KIG) and Scarborough Shoal as a Maritime Guarded Area (MPA).

Hagedorn explained the safety of the setting and all-natural means in the West Philippine Sea need to also be prioritized by the Philippines.
“We have to find out to cooperate as just one area in the defense of our normal means when we settle the territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea. The safety of the prosperous maritime resources and natural environment of the West Philippine Sea is a shared interest and duty of all adjoining states all around the South China Sea which should be a guiding coverage for all of us in the area,” he mentioned.
“We all stand to achieve or to drop dependent on the result of our collective actions although we settle our territorial disputes. Through this invoice, we hope for the Philippines to help initiate and spark this regional cooperation,” he additional.

“A hectare, or about 2.5 acres, of reef can generate a prospective benefit of approximately US $350,000 a yr. The coral reefs in the Spratlys, which provide as the breeding floor of fish in the South China Sea, comprise 34 percent of the world’s total coral reefs, regardless of the South China Sea occupying only 2.5 % of world’s full ocean and sea area,” it study.
“As these kinds of, the South China Sea is a person of the richest marine parts in the planet which is the residence to numerous marine ecosystems with about 3,000 species of fish and 600 species of coral reef,” it extra.
The explanatory note also mentioned how some functions by surrounding states borne out of territorial disputes like overfishing, poaching, and substantial-scale ocean filling or reclamation, amid some others, led to sizeable environmental degradation in the space.
